The lost Merlies are the human (avian) cost of that storm — hiding in the canopy, sheltering by the water, tucked into the ruins — and finding them is the game's emotional throughline.

The official launch announcement describes the loop plainly: rescue lost Merlies scattered by the storm and combine their unique abilities to unlock new paths. A rescue is therefore never just a warm moment — it is a mechanical unlock. Every bird brought home makes the flock more capable on the next trip.
